Good Morning, Baltimore

It’s time to update the Blood Donation map!

I made my last donation on March 5, and just received the email telling me where my blood landed. This time, my donation was sent to The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. I hope it’s busy circulating through someone awesome, helping him or her to beat whatever’s ailing him. Or her.

I love getting those emails. It’s so cool to see what can happen with one little hour out of my life.

And, because I’ve been singing this to myself ever since I got the email, let’s pause for a Hairspray break, shall we?

Adventures With Piggy: One Hour, Three Lives

Piggy and I did something very everyday but very special the other day.

piggy bloodThat’s right. We gave blood.

(Well, technically, I gave blood. Piggy was deferred. Her last publicity tour took her to too many places that posed a malaria risk. But she stayed with me to offer moral support.)

We’ve been giving blood for, oh, decades. If you have never done it, it’s really very simple, at least the way it’s done here: you go in, read some educational materials, answer a bunch of questions, have a quick iron/temperature/blood prepiggy blood snacksssure check, answer more questions, hop on the table, wince for a couple of seconds, then lie back and go all Zen for a few minutes until your pint bag is filled.

It takes about an hour, start to finish. The actual donating is maybe ten minutes of that time. It’s not strenuous. Not complicated. At the end, you get cookies. Best of all, you get to walk around for the rest of the day going:

  • I’m sorry, I can’t wash the dishes or vacuum, because I’m supposed to take it easy
  • Yes, I’d love to have the steak. I need to replenish that pint
  • Me? Oh, not much. Just a little blood donation that could help save up to three lives. How about you?

If you are a blood donor, I salute you. If you are able and would like to know more about donating, let me know, either in the comments or through the Contact form. All kidding aside, it’s one of the easiest ways I know of to make a difference in someone else’s life. Hard to beat that.
