31 Days of Promise, Day 18
Live For Today, The Grass Roots
Why this song?
First, I know that if folks are familiar with this song, it’s probably the original version from 1967. I like that version too. But this incarnation … this, I love. The guys were so young back in the 60’s, and that youth – along with the whole Vietnam-era backdrop against which it was released – gives the original a rather defiant, “we’re all gonna die so let’s live it up now” feeling. But sung as it is here, just a few years before lead singer Rob Grill’s death, it has a totally different feeling to me. This is the voice of experience and wisdom. This is someone looking back and saying, life goes so very fast. Cherish it while you can. Live every moment while you can.
